Randolph Township Manager Retires After Over Eight Years of Service

Stephen Mountain, Randolph’s Township Manager, has retired from the position he has held for over 8 years. Before serving Randolph, Mountain was Township Administrator of Mendham from March 1997-April 2014.

Mountain received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science from Clark University and a Masters in Public Administration Degree from American University. He used his education not only to serve as Township Manager, but from 1988-1991 he was the Director of Consortia Programs for the International City/County Management Association, he was a Management Intern for the City of Rockville Maryland from 1991-1992, and was Assistant Township Manager in Randolph from 1992-1997.

While working in Randolph, Mountain was a part of many projects and improvements in the town. He developed a 10 year Parks and Recreation plan and oversaw the implementation of several high visibility projects like the 90 acre Veteran’s Community Park and the construction of turf fields in Freedom Park. He also coordinated the completion of the transfer of a foreclosed property to the Morris Habitat for Humanity for the construction of 25 affordable housing units scheduled to open next fall.

Most notably, Mountain enjoyed working with great staff and volunteers that comprise the Randolph municipal organization.

“A job in public service, particularly municipal management is truly a labor of love. You have to love the job as it requires a full commitment in order to be successful. This being said, the rewards of public service exceed that of most other professions,” said Mountain. “As a municipal manager you have the ability to impact communities in a positive manner, help those in need, and in rare instances even change lives.”

Mountain’s first boss made him attend NJMMA meetings, where he was able to build relationships and form a network with municipal professionals across the state. He gained hours of professional development and advanced education needed to grow as a manager.

Mountain’s last day serving as Randolph Township Manager was June 30th, 2022.
